What Is Fuel Consumption Measurement?
Fuel consumption measurement is the process of metering the diesel an engine actually burns, rather than estimating it from tank dips or fuel dockets. A diesel fuel consumption meter — a positive displacement (PD) flow meter fitted to the engine’s fuel line — records every litre in real time, giving you a true litres-per-hour figure for any generator, truck, excavator or tractor.
Accurate engine fuel burn data lets you reduce operating costs, detect fuel theft and injector faults early, reconcile bulk deliveries against machine usage, and plan maintenance with confidence. RAZQUIP supplies generator fuel meters, engine flow meters and complete supply-and-return measurement kits built for Australian conditions, covering 0.5 L/min to 500 L/min at ±0.5% accuracy across the calibrated range.
PD meters are the preferred technology for a flow meter for diesel engines because they measure the actual volume passing through — unaffected by flow-rate swings, pulsation from injection pumps, or changes in fuel viscosity. See our OGM-15P pulse meter and PD flow meter with pulse output, or read the buying guides on our blog.
Key Applications
Generators & Standby Power
A generator fuel consumption meter tracks litres per hour on prime or standby gensets. Predict refuelling schedules, verify efficiency, and detect injector fouling or contamination before it causes downtime.
Transport & Fleet Management
Per-trip consumption correlated with route, load and driver behaviour. Supports fuel theft detection, driver training programs and accurate job costing for trucking and logistics operators.
Mining & Earthmoving
Benchmark fuel efficiency across excavators, haul trucks, loaders and drill rigs. Schedule maintenance on consumption trends and reconcile bulk fuel deliveries against machine usage.
Agricultural Machinery
Cost each operation — ploughing, seeding, spraying — per hectare. Identify underperforming tractors, harvesters and irrigation pumps across variable loads and terrain.
How Fuel Consumption Measurement Works
Modern diesel engines use a common-rail injection system where the lift pump draws more fuel from the tank than the engine burns; the excess returns to the tank via a return line. To measure true consumption you must account for both the fuel supplied and the fuel returned. There are two ways to set this up:
What You See on the Display
Both meters feed a digital fuel consumption display or PLC. The display totalises net litres burned — this Macnaught unit is reading 869.05 L on a marine diesel — and can show live litres-per-hour, trip totals and lifetime totals. Pulse, 4–20 mA and RS485 Modbus outputs let the same data flow into telematics, SCADA or cloud dashboards.
Marine installations use exactly the same principle; only the meter sizing and materials change.
Why Positive Displacement Meters?
PLC, SCADA & IoT Integration
Our digital fuel flow meters integrate with industrial monitoring and automation systems — from standalone generator displays to enterprise fuel management across multiple sites.
Industry standard for PLC and SCADA. Continuous proportional signal for real-time monitoring.
Multi-drop digital communication for multi-generator sites and distributed systems.
Configurable pulse per volume for totaliser displays, PLCs and flow computers.
Pair with IoT gateways and cellular loggers for remote and unmanned site monitoring.
Compatible Generator & Engine Brands
Our fuel flow meters install on the external supply and return lines — no modification to the engine or genset control system is required.
Choosing the Right Fuel Consumption Meter
| Flow Rate Range | Match the meter’s min/max flow to your engine’s consumption. Oversizing reduces accuracy; undersizing causes pressure drop. As a guide, a 100 kVA genset burns roughly 20–25 L/h at full load. |
| Connection Size | DN15 (1/2") for small engines through DN50 (2") for high-output machinery. BSP threads are standard in Australia. |
| Single or Dual Meter | Common-rail diesels above 50 HP benefit from a supply-and-return configuration for the highest accuracy. |
| Output Requirements | Mechanical totaliser, digital pulse, 4–20 mA for SCADA, or RS485 Modbus for multi-meter networks. |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to measure diesel fuel consumption on a generator?
Fit a positive displacement fuel flow meter to the generator’s fuel line. For small gensets a single meter on the supply line is sufficient; for common-rail engines above roughly 50 HP, use a dual-meter supply-and-return configuration so return fuel is subtracted and you get true net consumption in litres per hour.
What accuracy can I expect from a diesel fuel consumption meter?
RAZQUIP PD fuel flow meters achieve ±0.5% accuracy of reading across the calibrated flow range, with ±0.03% repeatability. Every meter is individually calibrated before dispatch and ships with a calibration certificate.
Can I install a fuel flow meter on an existing engine?
Yes. Fuel flow meters are designed for retrofit using standard BSP or NPT threaded connections on the external fuel lines — no modification to the engine or ECU is required. Most installations take under two hours.
Will a flow meter restrict fuel supply to the engine?
No. PD meters have very low internal pressure drop (typically under 0.15 bar at rated flow), well within the capability of a standard diesel lift pump.
Do I need one meter or two for an engine fuel burn meter?
If the engine has a fuel return line — as almost all common-rail diesels do — you need two meters (supply and return) for accurate results. If return flow is negligible, such as on small mechanically injected engines or generators, one meter on the supply line is enough.
Do I need a filter before the meter?
We recommend a fuel filter upstream of the supply meter. Most diesel systems already include a primary filter — install the meter downstream of it.
Can the meter connect to a PLC, SCADA or telematics system?
Yes. Our digital meters offer scaled pulse, 4–20 mA and RS485 Modbus RTU outputs. These pair with IoT gateways and cellular loggers for cloud-based remote monitoring of unmanned sites.
